Out-of-State Medical Cannabis Reciprocity in DC
Washington, DC recognizes medical cannabis registrations from most U.S. states, territories and select tribal nations. The list can change, so rather than copy it here we link straight to ABCA’s live reciprocity page.
Check that page right before your visit.
How Reciprocity Works
If your registration comes from a jurisdiction DC currently recognizes, you can shop at licensed DC retailers by showing your patient registration card or digital credential plus an unexpired government-issued photo ID.
If Your Registration Is Not Recognized
Eligible visitors 21 and older can apply for a DC temporary patient registration at myabca.dc.gov instead. See our DC registration guide for how it works.
Virginia Note
ABCA lists a specific rule for Virginia patients: bring a written certification form completed by an authorized healthcare practitioner, plus an unexpired government-issued ID such as a driver’s license or U.S. passport. Check ABCA’s reciprocity page for the current wording.
Best Practice
Check the official reciprocity page right before you visit, and keep your credential and ID together so check-in is quick.
